A drone tour of the Great Hall ceiling

Robert Treharne Jones expertly pilots a video drone just below the ceiling of the Great Hall

The ceiling of the Great Hall boasts an intricate design in stucco by Jean Baptiste St Michell, his only work in England. Although gilded in the current decorative scheme, it’s thought that the gilding may have been a later addition, and there’s speculation the ceiling may have been colourfully painted. A detailed examination of the paintwork will be undertaken in the restoration.

During restoration it’s hoped we’ll be able to give visitors a Jean Baptiste St Michell’s-eye view of restoration work on the ceiling in scaffolding tours led by the conservators.

Meanwhile, our own Robert Treharne Jones has sent up a drone to capture a spectacular video of the ceiling close up.
