Barts and the Olympics
As a Rio finalist and Tokyo hopeful, rower Jack Beaumont gave an athlete’s perspective on the Games, and how they have changed over the last 100 years. Jack’s grandparents were a Barts nurse and a Barts doctor – he has a string of world and European medals to his credit and is currently captain of the world-famous Leander Club, in Henley, whose athletes have won 126 Olympic medals since 1908.
In conversation with Olympic commentator Robert Treharne Jones, Jack looked back on Barts surgeon Raymond Etherington-Smith, a member of the GB gold medal eight in 1908; eye surgeon HB Stallard, who won a bronze medal in 1500m at the 1924 ‘Chariots of Fire’ Games; and Arthur Wint, the Jamaican athlete who won gold over 400m at two successive Olympics during his student career at Barts.
